Fort Orange Capital Management
October Commentary:
The financial market upheaval continued in October with large down moves in global equities, a strengthening of the U.S. Dollar and down moves in almost every commodity market. It has been a very difficult year for an investor with substantial losses in most portfolios. In has also been a difficult year for most hedge funds, but managed futures has performed as advertised and is really the true “hedge” fund an investor needs in their portfolio. It seems as for quite some time the investment world has confused volatility with risk. Our volatility is quite high, certainly higher than we even would like this year, but the volatility is a necessary part of what makes this investment beneficial to an investors portfolio. Without the volatility we would not be able to make the significant contribution to growth and diversification in an investors portfolio we have achieved.
Strategy Overview
Fort Orange is a managed futures advisor that applies a systematic, quantitative investment methodology across multiple trading models. The goal is to achieve long-term capital appreciation by attempting to capture “right-tail” profit potential, while managing risk through rigorous adherence to investment discipline, robust trading controls, and multi-layered portfolio diversification. Managed futures advisors generally exhibit positive skew in their return distributions. Fort Orange recognizes that positive skew, or “right tails”, is an inherent attribute of systematic trend-following programs, and structures its trading methodologies to attempt to exploit this attribute over the long term.
